HAMILTON, ONTARIO. The final weekend of the Ontario Hockey League season began on Thursday night for the Hamilton Bulldogs, travelling to Sadlon Arena in Barrie to meet the Colts.
The two teams combined for a cautious start to the game, both keeping chances well away from their respective nets. Marco Costantini would make his best stop of the period early on, a kick save off a left circle shot from Nathan Allensen through a screen, one of 8 he made in the opening frame. After the Colts were flagged for a hooking minor late in the period, the Bulldogs explosive power-play broke the ice at 17:37 with Nathan Staios delivering a puck to Mason McTavish for a pinball shot out of the bottom of the right circle, hitting Avery Hayes and rolling into the Barrie goal, giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead on Hayes' 40th of the year. Despite a penalty in the final minute stretching to the middle frame, the Bulldogs exited the opening 20 with a 1-0 lead.
A theme continuing all season is the Bulldogs' strong second periods and they had another big one against the Colts on Thursday. With Nathan Allensen in the box for kneeing Mark Duarte, Logan Morrison fed Avery Hayes off the left, below the goal line where Hayes put it on the tape of Jan Mysak in the bumper spot for his 33rd of the season at 6:20. Just after the midway mark of the period, the Bulldogs went back to the power-play with Gavin White playing low on the left for Logan Morrison, again hitting Jan Mysak in nearly the same spot to finish a tic-tac-goal for his 2nd of the game and 34th of the season giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Just 16 seconds later, Ryan Humphrey and George Diaco were sprung on a 2-on-1 by Gavin White with Diaco feeding Humphrey who banked the puck in off a Barrie defender to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
Barrie would put on a push towards the end of the second period only to have Marco Costantini stop all another 6 in the middle frame, taking the 4-0 lead to the final 20.
The Colts would manage to crack Marco Costantini in the final frame as Beau Jelsma fed Cooper Matthews to the left side of the Bulldogs net with Costantini making a spectacular split stop on the initial but the rebound fell right to Matthews to get the Colts on the board at 5:53.
That was as close at the Colts would get, with the Bulldogs capping off the night on Cole Brown's 9th of the season, flying off the bench to the slot and ripping a George Diaco passed Matteo Lalama to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead 14:08 and thanks to 25 Marco Costantini stops, where the scoreline would end. Hamilton wins their 49th game of the season, with Costantini collecting his 30th in the 5-1 victory.
The Hamilton Bulldogs return to FirstOntario Centre one more time in the regular season, hosting the Niagara IceDogs at 7:00pm on Friday, April 15th.
