Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-Cal Petersen and Ian McCoshen helped the Waterloo Black Hawks to two late-season wins Friday and Saturday, and their timely efforts were recognized by the United States Hockey League Monday as each was named the USHL Player of the Week at his position.
McCoshen was selected as CCM Defenseman of the Week for the third time in 2012/13. It was the second occasion that the league has chosen Petersen as the Reebok Goaltender of the Week.
Friday, Petersen turned away 27 Tri-City Storm shots in a 7-0 shootout victory at Young Arena. It was the first time Waterloo had blanked an opponent since late November. McCoshen made a vital contribution to the Hawks' offensive effort, taking a hand in three of Waterloo's first four tallies in the contest, assisting on two and scoring the third. It was the fourth consecutive game the Boston College recruit notched at least one point.
As the Hawks faced off against the Fargo Force Saturday, McCoshen extended his point streak. Late in the first period, he scored a power play goal which set Waterloo on their way toward a 2-1 victory. Petersen allowed just one goal while turning aside 38 shots. The two wins give Waterloo a three-point hold on fourth place in the USHL Western Conference and the league's final playoff spot.
With Monday's announcement, a Black Hawk player has earned one of the league's weekly honors on 14 different occasions in 2012/13.
The Black Hawks begin a run of four games in six days Tuesday in Green Bay against the Gamblers. The week ends with home games against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Saturday and Des Moines Buccaneers Sunday.
