Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Four days before the Waterloo Black Hawks and Omaha Lancers meet for the first time in 2012/13, the clubs have exchanged second-year defensemen in a trade announced Tuesday.

The swap brings Victor Newell to the Black Hawks in exchange for Matias Cleland. Newell had appeared in four games for Omaha this season, recording one assist and a -5 rating for the 1-3-0 Lancers. Recruited to attend Harvard, the 19-year-old missed just one regular season contest last season, appearing in more games than any other Lancer defenseman. Newell notched six goals and 14 assists - half of both totals were recorded on the power play - with an even plus-minus rating. In four USHL playoff appearances against the Black Hawks, the Burnaby, British Columbia native, scored a goal, an assist, and was +3. Before coming to the USHL as a 2011 first round entry draft selection, Newell spent two seasons playing for the Nanaimo Clippers of the junior A British Columbia Hockey League.

Cleland, an 18-year-old defenseman committed to New Hampshire, had two assists in three appearances this season after one goal and nine assists in 41 games last year. Like Newell, Cleland had an even plus-minus rating as a rookie; he was -4 early in 2012/13. The Black Hawks chose the Longmont, Colorado native during the third round of the 2010 USHL Futures Draft.

Before crossing sticks on Saturday, the Black Hawks host the Green Bay Gamblers at Young Arena Friday evening, while the Lancers visit the Des Moines Buccaneers at the same time.

This weekend's Waterloo home games both begin at 7:05 are part of the Hawks' annual commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Tickets for each contest are on sale now via waterlooblackhawks.com or from the Black Hawks Box Office by calling (319) 291-7680.
