Harriman Returns to Ducks

February 18, 2003 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Springfield/Ozark Mountain Ducks News Release

The Springfield/Ozark Mountain Ducks have re-signed Preston Harriman for the 2003 season. Last season's all-star MVP in the Central Baseball League, Harriman led the league in hitting for most of the 2002 season but fell off at the end to finish in sixth with a .317 average.

" I feel athletically he was as good as any player in the league last season," Manager Phil Wilson said. "We are just happy to have him, I feel like he will get some more looks from affiliated ball like he did last season and he will have a chance to get back into affiliated ball if he wants to go that route."

He played 92 games at third base for the Ducks, while driving in 51 runs, 22 doubles, five triples and three Home Runs. Harriman also made one appearance on the mound and at shortstop and caught two games in Jackson, MS late in the season. Harriman, 23, was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2000 draft. He resides in Wesley, AR in the off-season.

Shied Becomes Scout

The Springfield/Ozark Mountain Ducks first baseman Jeremy Schied has retired from playing baseball. Shied accepted a scouting role with the Oakland Athletics in the American League. Schied, who began his professional career in 1998 with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings of the then Texas/Louisiana League, served three seasons in the Athletics organization in rookie ball and short-season A ball. Schied hit .264 in 93 games for the Ducks in 2002.

"Jeremy was an intricate part of our club last year playing first base and hitting in the middle of our lineup," Manager Phil Wilson said. "He got an opportunity to go with the Oakland Athletics ball club as a scout in the South Carolina area and I think it's a great opportunity for Jeremy and we wish him well."

Schied, who turns 27 on March 24, had career numbers with the Ducks in 2002 in Doubles (21), RBI (43) and Stolen Bases (6).
