Harlem Remains Undefeated as Strong Dogs at Home
February 6, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Tampa Bay Strong Dogs News Release
BROOKLYN, USA â After returning home from a disappointing road game at the Mississippi Stingers Tuesday night and a sudden inclusion of two home games at a different venue, the Harlem Strong Dogs were ready to play the Maryland NightHawks at Medgar Evers College Saturday night.
It took some time for the Strong Dogs to familiarize themselves with the ambience of the Medgar Evers gymnasium. Both Maryland and Harlem exchanged leads throughout the first half with the NightHawks went into the intermission with a 42-40 lead.
American Basketball Association (ABA) East All-Star Assistant Coach and Strong Dogs Head Coach Kenny Charles brought his team back out onto the court in the second half and they were determined to make a statement.
Harlem held Maryland to only 12 points while scoring 33 in the third quarter. The Strong Dogs continued their offensive onslaught with 44 points in the fourth quarter to close out the final score with a 119-91 victory.
Strong Dogs' Courtney Fields had a tremendous game with 38 points and 20 rebounds (10 offensive, 10 defensive). Other Harlem players double digit points contributors included "Alimoe" with 22 points, ABA East All-Stars Obadiah Toppin with 20 points and Willie Shaw with 10 and Tobe Carberry with 11 points.
Maryland NightHawks guard and former Syracuse Orangeman and Vancouver Grizzly of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Lawrence Moten scored 20 points and 7 rebounds and his teammate Barry Mitchell had 19 points in the loss.
"[Harlem] had to get back to the way we're used to winning. The second half proved that our focus towards the [ABA] playoffs is getting there," said Coach Kenny Charles confidently.
Harlem has not lost a game in New York City as the Strong Dogs and remains two games behind in the loss column to ABA Blue (East) Division leaders Mississippi Stingers.
The Strong Dogs play the Maryland NightHawks once again at Medgar Evers College today, Sunday, February 06, 2005 at 1 p.m.
