Alabama Hammers News Release

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Alabama Hammers got on track in the second quarter Saturday night against the Columbus Lions, received a further boost from their passing game, special teams and defense in the third, and cruised from there in a 70-43 win at the Columbus Civic Center.

The Professional Indoor Football League-leading Hammers improved to 6-2 behind an offensive attack that included 347 passing yards and seven touchdowns from quarterback Russell Hill. Mico McSwain had three scoring catches, Jeremy Grier a pair, with Charles McClain and Larry Shipp adding one each.

Defensive back Cortez Stubbs had an interception and returned a fumble for a touchdown, while fullback Daniel Ross powered in for a late rushing score.

"It was a good team victory coming off a two-week layoff,'' said Alabama coach Dean Cokinos, whose team travels to Louisiana next weekend.

"We made plays in all three phases of the game - offense, defense and special teams."

The Hammers trailed 15-7 after the first quarter but answered with 21 straight points to lead it 28-15 at intermission.

Stubbs' 28-yard fumble return and score, McClain's 54-tard kickoff return and Hill's 11-yarder to McSwain followed by former Auburn kicker and Grissom grad Chandler Brooks kept the Alabama lead paced at 20 heading to the final quarter.

An 18-yard pass from Lee Chapple to Maurice Dupree pulled the Lions (3-5) within two scores with just under 12 minutes to play, but the Hammers closed things out from there with a touchdown pass to McSwain, an interception by McClain and Ross' third score rushing of the season.

Chapple threw for 240 yards and five touchdowns, but was intercepted twice and sacked four times by an Alabama defensive line sparked by Benji McDowell and his three takedowns.
