Alabama Hammers News Release

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Head coach Dean Cokinos' first pair of signings should have a major impact on both sides of the ball for the Alabama Hammers.

Returning All-Professional Indoor Football League wide receiver Mico McSwain and veteran linebacker/wide receiver Jeremy Grier - a former All-af2 pick who played in the Arena Football League last season - have signed with the Hammers.

"We are excited to have players of this caliber sign with us for the 2013 season,'' said Cokinos, who enters his first season with the Hammers after coaching the AFL's late Georgia Force the past two years.

"Our goal is to build the team meticulously with highly talented players who possess good football pedigree." Grier (6-2, 210-pounds) - out of UT-Chattanooga - was a leading receiver for the Vipers in 2009-10 and starred defensively for the Force under Cokinos with 44 tackles and four interceptions last season.

"Jeremy has played many years for me and he is a true iron man. You always know what you will get from him week in and out, he is reliable, tough and is a strong contributor on offense, defense and special teams."

McSwain (6-2, 220) led the Hammers with 72 catches for nearly 1,000 yards to go along with 24 touchdowns in 2012. The former North Alabama star - who has NFL experience with the Tennessee Titans -was third in PIFL touchdowns, fourth in receiving yards per game (88.5), all-purpose (102.2 ypg.) and scoring (13.1 point per game) before a stint with the Force to close out the season.

"With Mico, the sky is the ceiling for him," Cokinos said. " He has so much untapped talent that I got to see firsthand in the short period that he was with me in Georgia. I am really looking forward to helping Mico move ahead in his career."

Hammers Tidbit: Quarterback Arvell Nelson has signed with the AFL's Spokane Shock. Nelson was 173 of 317 with 15 interceptions for 2,319 yards and 51 touchdowns in 11 games for Alabama in 2012.
