Hammers Open Season Vs. Venom

March 26, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Alabama Hammers News Release

The Alabama Hammers, defending champions of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL), open defense of its 2013 title with 17 returnees from last season's championship squad. The Hammers will tangle with the newest team in the PIFL, the Nashville Venom, at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, in the Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center.

"We have big holes to fill as we lost our fullback, quarterback, center and linebacker off last year's team," said Dean Cokinos, head coach of the Alabama Hammers. "We'll find out quickly this week what kind of team we have."

Of the 17 returning members of the Hammers the 2013 PIFL Player of the Year Mico McSwain will lead the squad into 2014 action. Also, Benji McDowell, league leader in sacks, will return. Starting quarterback will be Kevin Huff who played backup signal caller a year ago. Mix in some outstanding newcomers to the squad and the Hammers could start off the season with a bang. The PIFL Kicker of the Year, Armondo Cuko, who played for Knoxville last year, will have kicking duties. Two additional players who were both All-League performers last season Maurice Dupree (Columbus) and Ginnny Ibe (Knoxville) will be in action with the Hammers.

"We're excited about the new direction the league is going as the growth of the PIFL is great," added Cokinos. "We'll have a balanced team this Saturday for the season opener."

Tickets for the season opener, which will include the unveiling of the 2013 PIFL Championship Banner, are available at the VBC Box Office or by calling the Hammers at 256-551-2222.
