Alabama Hammers News Release

HUNTSVILLE - The Alabama Hammers will get their 2012 Professional Indoor Football season under way Saturday night at 7 p.m. against the Louisiana Swashbucklers at the Lake Charles Civic Center.

Then on Tuesday, March 20 a meet and greet with players, coaches and the 2012 Hammerettes will take place in the Von Braun Center's South Hall from 5-7 p.m. The event is open to the public and Hammer fans can also pick up their season tickets.

Alabama returns home next Saturday to take on the Columbus Lions in the VBC's Propst Arena. The game starts at 7 p.m. And the first 4,000 fans will receive a magnetic schedule compliments if Huntsville Hospital and TOC.

Hammers coach Marty Hammond made his final cuts earlier this week and has set his 20-man roster for the game.

"I think we've had a pretty good week of practice coming off the preseason win in Knoxville," said Hammond, whose Alabama squad handled the Nighthawks 70-45 at Civic Coliseum.

"We are sorta going into the unknown having not seen any game film on Louisiana, but we will just do the best we can."

Former Texas Southern quarterback Arvell Nelson will start for the Hammers and he will have no shortage of talent in his sights with returners and ex-UNA standouts Mico McSwain and Charles McClain working at wide receiver.

"Arvell has looked good in practice but we will have to see how he reacts in a game and how he makes adjustments,'' Hammond said.

Defensively the Hammers are paced by returning all-league linebacker and former Alabama A&M standout Darian Payne, with former Bulldog Al Donaldson at defensive back and ex-Alabama Viper and Scottsboro native Eric Scott returning to start at linebacker.
