Alabama Hammers News Release

The Alabama Hammers traveled to Nashville on Friday evening to face the defending Professional Indoor Football League's (PIFL) champion Nashville Venom for the 2015 season opener. The Hammers under the leadership of first-year head coach Scott Sharp hammered out a convincing 34-26 victory over the Venom utilizing a tough defense and an offense, which scored when it needed to.

"Our offense made plays when we needed them to, our offensive line played well most of the night and our defense came up with two crucial turnovers for the team effort and the win," said Sharp. "It was a great win for us, especially not knowing what we had going into the season opener."

The Hammers led 27-20 at the half scoring three touchdowns via the passing game as quarterback Garrett Sufphen hit Mico McSwain (2-yards and 3-yards) and Tyrone Hendrix (16-yards) for scores. Charles McClain added a 50-yard missed field return for a score to put the visitors in the lead at the break.

The second half was a low scoring affair as Sufphen (22-40-1/213-yds) found McClain on a 13-yard strike for the lone points for the Hammers in the half. The Hammers defense added two interceptions on the night holding Nashville to its lone score in the second half coming with just two minutes remaining.

"I hoped we would be ready for the game," said Sharp of the victory. "It feels great to get that win under our belts."

Next up for the Hammers, the squad will be on the road on Saturday, April 4, traveling to Richmond to face the Raiders with game time scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CDT.
