Alabama Hammers News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Alabama Hammers are headed to the Professional Indoor Football League championship game.
The Hammers took control of Monday night's semifinal game against Albany with a breakout second quarter and held serve the rest of the way in a 61-46 victory before 2,263 fans at the Von Braun Center.
Alabama improved to 11-2 on the year and will now host Richmond (8-5) in the PIFL title game next Monday. Richmond advanced with a 44-40 win over Lehigh Valley.
"It was a tough win, but a great win for this franchise,'' Hammers coach Dean Cokinos said. "We got that surge there in the second quarter and rode it out. Now it's time to get ready for Richmond and focus winning a championship."
The Hammers trailed 11-3 after the first quarter but struck quickly in the second behind a 2-yard run by Daniel Ross, a 3-yard run by Larry Shipp and Russel Hill's 19-yard scoring strike to Mico McSwain. A 15-yard interception return by Jeremy Grier for another score made it a 31-13 game at the half.
The game did tighten up a bit down the stretch before the Hammers prevailed behind Hill touchdown passes to Grier and CJ Johnson, capped with another Ross dive from 1-yard out to seal the win as time wound down.
Hill finished the game 13 of 27 for 201 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. McSwain paced the Hammers with six receptions and a touchdown with Johnson adding four and a pair of scores.
