Alabama Hammers News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Albany Panthers simply outlasted the Alabama Hammers at the Von Braun Center's Propst Arena on Saturday night.
Alabama quarterback Kevin Eakin threw nine touchdown passes - seven of those going to former UNA star Mico McSwain - but it wasn't enough against the South Division-leading Panthers in a 86-70 loss before 2,970 fans.
Albany's Cecil Lester threw for 305 yards and 10 touchdowns as the Panthers improved to 8-1, while Eakin completed 27 of 52 passes for 309 yards with three interceptions as the Hammers fell to 3-6 on the Southern Indoor Football League season.
Charles McClain and Maurice Dupree added scoring catches for Alabama, while Antwone Savage led the Panthers with five touchdown receptions.
Eakin's 23-yard pass to McSwain cut the Albany lead to 29-21 early in the second quarter before a Panther run capped by Wes Virgilio's 20-yard field goal had the visitors ahead 46-21 with 5:22 left in the half.
That lead grew to 67-35 early in the third quarter after a 2-yard run by Lester before the Hammers rebounded to pull within 17 points heading to the final quarter. But Alabama failed to convert with a chance to whittle the Albany to 10 and the teams exchanged scores down the stretch to settle the issue.
