Alabama Hammers News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - In 2008 Dean Cokinos guided the Tennessee Valley Vipers to the arenafootball2 championship.
The man is back.
After a two-year stint with the late Georgia Force of the Arena Football League, Cokinos now returns to Huntsville and will coach the Alabama Hammers during their 2013 Professional Indoor Football League campaign.
"I am excited about the opportunity to return to Huntsville," said Cokinos, who posted a 32-21 overall record in Huntsville from 2008-10.
"Hands down the three years that I coached here were the most enjoyable of my career. Huntsville has the perfect setup for indoor football, they have a great venue, great fan support and a strong owner in Jeff Knight.
"Huntsville deserves a winner again and our goal is to wake up the sleeping giant and build the organization back up to what it was the last time we were here."
Cokinos replaces former coach Marty Hammond, who went 7-17 with the Hammers the past two seasons.
"It's great to have Dean back,'' said Hammers and Southern Sports & Entertainment president Joe Stroud. "We have a history of being a winner here and Dean has played a big part of that."
Prior to joining the Vipers, Cokinos spent time as the head coach of af2's Wilkes Barre/Scranton Pioneers in 2003 and the IFL's San Angelo Stampede in '04. He then joined the AFL's Nashville Katz in '05 and became offensive coordinator the following season.
At the college level, Cokinos coached at Umass-Boston (1990), Austin Peay State (1991) and West Alabama (1992). He also coached in the German Football League which served as an NFL Europe feeder for teams in Munich, Berlin, and Nurnberg.
Cokinos and his wife Trina have two girls, Isidora and Alexandria.
