Hammerheads Set for Season Opener
April 3, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC will open the 2014 USL PRO regular season at Legion Stadium on Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. as they host the Harrisburg City Islanders. This match will also be the first matchup of the season for the City Islanders.
The Hammerheads concluded their 2013 USL PRO regular season with an overall record of 11-4-11 after being one point shy of clinching a playoff berth. With a heavy home schedule set for the first half of the upcoming season, the squad has an advantage to get ahead in the league standings on their home turf before being on the road nine out of their final 14 matches.
"I feel confident coming into this season," said Wilmington Hammerheads FC Head Coach David Irving. "The players have been ready to take the field and be part of the action for weeks now. There has been a good spirit coming through preseason amongst the team and they are ready to get to work."
Familiar players such as Cody Arnoux, Christian Davidson, Mickael Oliveira, Will Heaney and four-year veterans Paul Nicholson and Tom Parratt will be taking the field in 2014. Joining them is Yahaya Musa and Troy Cole returning for their second season as Hammerheads following their stint during the team's championship run in 2012.
Wilmington Hammerheads FC entered into an exclusive affiliation agreement with Major League Soccer's Toronto FC this season that resulted in Toronto FC loaning players to the Hammerheads. Goalkeeper Quillan Roberts, along with midfielders Daniel Lovitz and Manu Aparicio are among those that will be taking the pitch.
In addition, the Hammerheads have fielded a combination of experienced, international, and collegiate standouts.
The team will be returning to their traditional Hammerheads blue and white striped kit this season, as well as incorporating a navy kit in relation to their recent rebranding earlier this year.
New Hammerheads merchandise will be available at the merchandise booth at Legion Stadium during the match on Saturday. Gates to Legion Stadium open at 6:00 p.m. for fans.
Wilmington Hammerheads FC will be broadcasting the match live via their YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/WilmHammerheadsFC .
