Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Hammerheads return to Legion Stadium on Friday night as they host VSI Tampa Bay FC at 7:30 p.m. after traveling on the road the last two weeks. Friday will be Tampa Bay's first appearance at Legion Stadium in USL PRO.
Wilmington returns to Legion following a draw in Rochester and a loss in Pittsburgh last weekend. The Hammerheads were desperately looking to return to Wilmington with two victories and six points added to their league rankings to increase their chances of claiming a spot in the playoffs next month.
Wilmington and Tampa Bay last encountered in May as Tampa Bay took a 1-0 victory at Plant City Stadium. Tampa Bay midfielder Joseph Noone scored the second half goal that increased the deficit for the Hammerheads by one. The arrival of VSI Tampa Bay FC at Legion Stadium also involves the return of three former 2012 Wilmington Hammerheads players: goalkeeper Alex Horwath, Andriy Budnyy, and Troy Cole.
Tampa Bay (8-7-3) currently holds the eighth position in the league rankings, trailing the Dayton Dutch Lions by one point. Wilmington (6-10-4) rests in the tenth position. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for a slot in the playoffs.
Also on Friday, the Wilmington Hammerheads will be hosting âAlumni Night' as they welcome former Hammerheads players (1996-2012) back to Legion Stadium. This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Wilmington Hammerheads claiming the 2003 USL PRO Select Championship in which many of the players will be in attendance and recognized on field during halftime.
