Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC announced today the addition of defender Michael Mecham to the 2016 USL regular season roster.
Mecham makes his professional debut with the Hammerheads after playing locally at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The defender was a team captain and started all four seasons for the Seahawks at right and center back. He led the UNCW defensive unit which ranked second in the Colonial Athletic Association in goals allowed this past season.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the Hammerheads," said Mecham. "As a child I always wanted to be a professional soccer player so this is a dream come true. The Hammerheads have given me a great opportunity to play with a team I am familiar with and in a place I am familiar with and I am looking forward to joining them. "
In 2015 Mecham was selected to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) All-State Men's Soccer Team as well as the All- Colonial Athletic Association Second-Team.
"I'm very excited to have Michael [Mecham] be a part of our roster plans for next season," said Head Coach Mark Briggs. "I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to watch a number of his games as he attended UNCW. He will bring an enthusiasm and a desire that I'm looking for in all my players. He understands what it means to be a Hammerhead and to represent our community. He has had a fantastic mentor in Aidan Heaney at UNCW and is someone I have high hopes for in 2016."
The Hammerheads front office and coaching staff is actively recruiting talent for the 2016 USL season and expects some additional player announcements coming soon.
