Hammer Nails Down Three-Year Deal With B-Sens
July 6, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators, in conjunction with the Ottawa Senators, announced today that they have signed left wing Denis Hamel to a three-year American Hockey League contract.
Hamel, 30, returns to the city where he enjoyed the most prolific three-year span in his professional career. Between 2003 and 2006, Hamel amassed Binghamton Senator franchise records in goals (124) and points (236) while ranking second all-time with 235 games played (Andy Hedlund, 270) and 112 assists (Jason Spezza, 117). A point-per-game performer during his previous stint with Binghamton in the Ottawa organization, Hamel's next AHL point will be his 400th in having appeared in just over 500 AHL contests.
In the 2005-06 season, Hamel set AHL personal bests with 56 goals (T-1st AHL), 27 power play goals (1st AHL), and 91 points (6th AHL). The 56 goals were the most ever by a Binghamton AHL skater while his 27 power play strikes tied an American Hockey League record held by three others including former Binghamton/Ottawa Senator Brad Smyth (Carolina 1995-96) and former Binghamton Ranger Peter Ferraro (1995-96).
"Making the commitment to sign an elite player like Denis Hamel to be the cornerstone of our club is tremendous and signifies the priority in getting the B-Sens back on track," said Tom Mitchell, Binghamton Senators Executive Vice President. "A good mix of veterans, led by Hammer, along with what we anticipate to be a strong core of recent draft picks to stock Binghamton in 07-08 bodes well for us," Mitchell added.
