Halama Holds Bridgeport Down

(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (2-1) suffered their first defeat to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (1-2) in the Liberty Division Championship Series. Bridgeport was shut out 5-0 and now leads the series 2-1.

Luis Gonzalez (0-1) lasted five-and-one-third innings and gave up three earned runs, three hits, and six walks while fanning seven. Chris Rivera tossed two-thirds of an inning of shutout baseball while Luis Arroyo allowed two runs in his frame of work. Kevin Mannix and Paul Oseguera each delivered a shutout inning at the end.

John Halama (1-0) worked seven-plus and allowed no runs. The Bluefish produced seven hits and struck out once against the winning pitcher. Southern Maryland's bullpen threw two scoreless frames to shut the door.

Bridgeport fell behind in the third courtesy of a solo shot to leftcenter by Jeremy Owens.

Southern Maryland added another two runs, in the sixth, off Gonzalez. The southpaw walked the bases loaded before Christian Lopez served a sacrifice fly to center. With runners at first and second, Travis Garcia scalded a single to rightcenter to plate the third run.

The Blue Crabs added two more tallies to close the scoring. David Espinosa led off with a walk and Casey Benjamin launched a two-run shot to right off Arroyo.

Righthander, Matt Pike (12-5, 4.15 ERA), is expected to take the mound on Saturday while righthander, Joe Newby (6-5, 2.48 ERA) will oppose the Atlantic League All-Star.
