Columbus Riverdragons News Release

COLUMBUS, Ga., (Jan. 20) - Former Indiana University star A.J. Guyton hit a running jumper in the lane with two seconds to play in regulation as the Huntsville Flight held off the Columbus Riverdragons, 101-99, at the Columbus Civic Center in NBDL action Monday afternoon. The Riverdragons staged a dramatic comeback in the game's final minute to set up Guyton's heroics. Columbus trailed by seven, 98-91, with :31.1 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Riverdragons rallied with a 8-1 run capped by a fade-away 3-pointer from the top of the arc by Greg Stempin to even the score at 99-99 with seven seconds left on the clock. On the next Flight possession, Guyton sliced into the lane to hit his game-winner. Guyton finished with 15 points and a team-high four assists. The Flight (15-13) has won two straight games following a season-high four-game losing streak. The league's top defensive team, the Flight eclipsed 100 points for the first time this season. "Our team hasn’t peaked yet," said Guyton. "We want to peak later in the season. We’re working on getting everybody in the right position." The Flight's Bakari Hendrix led all scorers with 23 points hitting 9-of-12 free throws. Overall, the Flight made 34-of-43 free throws (79.1%). Columbus took almost half as many trips to the line and struggled when they did, hitting 15-of-22 FTA's (68.2%). Stempin broke out for a season-high 21 points knocking down a team single-game record tying five three-pointers on six attempts over 23 minutes off the bench. Stempin led five Riverdragons in double-figures. Tang Hamilton and Tyrone Washington each had 14 points. The loss snapped the Riverdragons 3-game winning streak at home. Columbus (12-14) played the entire second half without Nate Johnson, the league's leading scorer, who left the game late in the second quarter with a sprained left ankle. Johnson, who finished with 16 points, will undergo treatment and is expected to be listed as probable when the Riverdragons make their first trip to Asheville this Friday to face the Altitude. The Flight also play next Friday, taking on the Revelers in Mobile.

Prior to the game in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Georgia State Representative Calvin Smyre of Columbus led a moment of silence to pay tribute to Columbus city leader and civic icon, A.J. McClung. Smyre, the chairman of the Rules Committee in the Georgia House of Representatives, played a vital role in the passing of legislation to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday as a state holiday.
