Fayetteville Guard News Release
KISSIMMEE, FL ---The Fayetteville Guard jumped out to a commanding 13-3 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to a 47-34 victory over the Kissimmee Kreatures Friday night at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida. It was the Walter Ford show as the Guard all-purpose back accounted for 169 yards of total offense and 2 touchdowns. Ford scored on a 32 yard run in the 3rd quarter to put the Guard in control 33-13. Kissimmee answered with a 20 yard Rick Pyle to TJ Simmons touchdown pass to cut the score to 33-20 and forced the Guard to turn the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession. The Kreatures then attempted a long field goal on which Ford dipped ducked and dashed his way to a Barry Sanders like 49 yard missed field goal return for a touchdown. The former Virginia Tech Hokie set up his blocks beautifully as he used the whole field to leave Kreatures defenders grasping for air. "We feel like we're on a roll," Ford said. "We realistically could be 6-2 instead of 2-6 with all the last minute losses we've endured. If we continue to dominate games like this, we'll be tough to beat." Kissimmee (2-7) was able to close the gap to 39-33 midway through the 4th quarter after 2 consecutive Guard turnovers but Brandon McDowell put the nail in coffin after catching a 29 yard touchdown pass from Brian Baker with 2:34 remaining in the contest. McDowell finished the night with a team leading 4 catches for 40 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kreature quarterbacks Pile and starter Rob Harding were harassed all night by a Guard defense led by defensive end Al DuBose who had 1 sack and safety Tommy Stanley, who had a team leading 7.5 tackles to go along with 2 TFL's and 2 pass break-ups. Fayetteville (2-6) is now 2-2 under new coach and former Oakland Raider Mike Siani. The Guard return to Fayetteville for a four game home stand this Saturday as they take on Atlantic East Division leader St. Louis (6-1). Kick-off is slated for 7:05 pm at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville. Stay wired to www.fayettevilleguard.com for the game preview. QB x 2: Siani was unable to continue with his rotating quarterbacks on Friday night. Joe Davis left the game in the 2nd quarter after going 4-7 passing with soreness in the left knee he injured last week against Rome. Baker performed well completing 11-18 passes to go along with 5 scores. Davis is questionable for the St. Louis game. Very Hokie like: Ford has amassed an astounding 393 yard of total offense in the last 2 games. Dynamic DB's: The Guard defensive backfield continues to give opposing quarterbacks fits. It was Stanley and Kelvin Jones again on Friday night as the duo combined for 13 tackles, 2 TFL's, 5 pass break-ups and an interception. Fayetteville State product Deron Donald also added an interception.
