Guard hit the road for first game

Fayetteville, NC --- The Fayetteville Guard is on the road this weekend to St. Louis for the team's first game of the 2005 season. They'll take on the River City Rage for the St. Louis team home opener and military appreciation night.

Of The Guard's 25 man roster, 22 will dress. Taking the field will be former NIFL and AFL players along with some local rookies. In addition to the local and regional talent, the team consist of men from as far north as Virginia and as far west as Hawaii. The men of The Guard will be under the leadership of Head Coach Terry Smith and Defensive Coach Charles Gunnings.

"Defensively we have some of the best talent available in the league," said Jack Bowman, Vice President of Football Operations and Assistant Coach. "Offensively we're looking pretty strong. We have a lot of veteran players and talented rookies that we feel will be competitive in every game."

This weekend is the culmination of intense training at the team's official training facility. Approximately 40 men reported for camp three weeks ago and they gave all, but for some their best wasn't good enough. Cuts and replacement players will be a continual process as Smith works to build a championship team.

Don Koonce and Trey Edge, of DK Sports, will be broadcasting the game live on ESPN 1230 AM; kick off time will be 8:05 EST. A pre-game segment will begin 15 minutes prior to kick-off

Don't miss the Coach's Show Monday 7 p.m. broadcasting live on ESPN 1230AM, from Buffalo Wild Wings. Head Coach Terry Smith and Defensive Coach Charles Gunnings will discuss highlights and outline strategies for the upcoming April 2nd home opener at the Crown Coliseum.
