Griffins youth hockey camp begins Monday

WHAT: The Grand Rapids Griffins will conduct their annual youth hockey camp, which helps young players maximize their skills through four hours of on-ice instruction, one hour of dry-land training and one hour of film/off-ice instruction each day.

WHO: The camp will operate under the guidance of Griffins assistant coach Greg Ireland. Griffins head coach Danton Cole, long-time Griffins defenseman Dave Van Drunen and former Griffin/current Florida Panthers defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski will be among the instructors assisting on various days during the two week-long camps. In addition, Kentwood native Mike Knuble, now a member of the Philadelphia Flyers, is scheduled to make a special appearance at the camp on Wednesday, Aug. 4 at noon.

Approximately 70 children, ranging in age from seven to 16, will take part in the camp. Donations from Bagel Beanery, Centennial Securities and Fuel Systems are enabling six children from Griffins Youth Foundation programs to participate in the camp.

WHEN: Monday, Aug. 2 to Friday, Aug. 6, and Monday, Aug. 9 to Friday, Aug. 13

9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily.

On-ice sessions run 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.

WHERE: Griff's IceHouse at Belknap Park

HOW: A few openings still remain for children to participate in the camp. The cost is $300 per child per week, and includes a Griffins jersey and hat, along with lunch each day from sponsors such as Subway, Adobe and Bagel Beanery.
