Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Greensboro, NC: The Augusta GreenJackets got their third straight win tonight, while ending the Greensboro Grasshoppers three game win streak. The key to the GreenJackets 7-4 win came from an early power surge.
On the first pitch, Malique Ziegler hit a leadoff home run to left field on the first pitch of the game. Later in the inning, Ryan Kirby hit a two-run home run to right field. This gave the GreenJacket's starting pitcher Joe Marciano a 3-0 lead to work with before he even threw his first pitch.
Marciano would not surrender that lead as he was dominate the Grasshopper's lineup. In five innings pitched, he only allowed three hits and one run. He also added four strikeouts as the lefty shutdown a Grass-hopper's lineup who had previous success against lefties.
Shane Matheny also drove in two runs for the GreenJackets, while Jeffry Parra and Jean Angomas batted in one run of their own.
In the ninth, the GreenJackets gave up three runs and allowed the go ahead run to come to the plate. This prompted the GreenJackets to go to the bullpen for John Russell, who was tasked with getting the last out. After some nerve-racking moments, he got the strikeout and captured victory for the GreenJackets.
The GreenJackets will be back in action tomorrow night at 7 pm against the Grasshoppers for the second of a three game series.
