Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The GreenJackets ride to the top of the list as the best logo in Minor League Baseball continued on Tuesday with a victory over number four, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. The GreenJackets, who are a number 12 seed, advanced by receiving 55% of the vote in the CNBC Minor League Baseball Logo Contest.
"This is a big win for us for a lot of reasons," GreenJackets General Manager Nick Brown said. "It was a four seed we were able to knock off, a Double-A team and a team that is brand new with a fresh new logo, but our fans showed the support again to push us through."
Voting for the second round ended at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning with Augusta getting 55% of the over 5,000 votes cast for the match up. The GreenJackets continue to not be fazed by the higher seeds in the tournament.
"Every year, it seems like there is a different Cinderella story each March and the glass slipper is definitely fitting us right now," Brown said. "I really can't imagine any other team out there actually beating us because of our national following."
The GreenJackets are hoping their popularity along with the Master's Golf tournament right around the corner will help fuel the fire that is pushing the GreenJackets to the top logo in the country.
Augusta will have to put up their glass slipper to another team that is trying to last until the clock strikes midnight. The GreenJackets will next face the 16 seed Casper Ghosts. The Ghosts were able to win against a number one seed in the first round then came away with a win over number nine, the Lansing Lugnuts.
"We really don't have any worries about facing Casper in the next round because we already beat two higher seeded teams so a 16 seed should be a cake walk," Brown said. "The hard part is going to be predicting by how much we win by and if it will be a blow out or not."
The contest has been put together by Darren Rovell with 64 logos chosen to participate in the competition. The winner of the 64 team field will be crowned the best Minor League Baseball Logo in the country and the competition runs through March 31 on the web site, www.cnbc.com.
The GreenJackets have had their current logo since the 2006 season and it highlights the GreenJackets' ties to the Augusta community and the Masters Golf Tournament. Auggie, the team mascot, is portrayed in a green jacket holding two baseball bats and two golf clubs underlying the GreenJackets name.
The 20th Anniversary season begins at home on Thursday, April 3 with a four game series against Greensboro. The home stand will include a Fireworks Show on Friday, April 4, the ZOOperstars on Saturday, April 5 and finish on Sunday, April 6; one day before The Masters first practice round will begin. It is the first time since the 2003 season that the GreenJackets will open at home before The Masters.
Season seat packages start as low as $55.00 per seat. For more information on season seats call the GreenJackets at 706-736-7889 or visit www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
