Augusta GreenJackets News Release

After a strong start to the season, the GreenJackets offense hit a bump in the road on Wednesday night. Despite recording nine hits, the GreenJackets (4-3) failed to produce a run against the Sand Gnats (4-3) in a 7-0 loss.

With two outs in the top of the first, Mitch Delfino and Shayne Houck hit back-to-back singles. However, Rafael Rodriguez ended the rally with a ground out to Savannah pitcher Matthew Bowman.

Stranding runners on base became a trend for theGreenJackets. They stranded eight runners, going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Bowman got the win for Savannah, allowing just four hits while striking out four batters in six innings. While theGreenJackets bats struggled to string hits together, their pitchers were unable to keep the game within reach.

After pitching a dominant 5 shut out innings en route to a 4-0 win against Lexington on Friday, Martin Agosta gave up six hits and four runs in 3.2 innings on Wednesday.

Left-hander Steven Okert also had an uncharacteristic night. Okert had not allowed an earned run in his two prior appearances. But on Wednesday, Okert gave up five hits and three runs, including a homer, in his 1.1 innings.

One bright spot for the GreenJackets was their bullpen. Stephen Johnson, Brandon Farley and Tyler Mizenko each held the Sand Gnats scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. They allowed just one hit each. However, the lack of momentum on offense prevented the GreenJackets from taking advantage.

While the GreenJackets dropped their second straight game against the Sand Gnats, they are only 1 game behind in the Southern Division standings.

The GreenJackets will now head to Charleston, S.C., where they will face the RiverDogs (5-2) in a four-game series starting Thursday.
