MIAMI, FL, March 4, 2009 -- The leadership of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce today affirmed its support of professional soccer as an integral component of the South Florida sports franchises at its March Board of Directors meeting. The action gained in significance following yesterday's announcement that the community would not be getting an MLS (Major League Soccer) franchise, combined with the current initiative by the Miami FC to retain its team in South Florida.
The Greater Miami Chamber understands that soccer is a critical component for the economic and emotional well-being of a community. It further believes soccer is a critical sport that is relevant not only to the scores of local amateur, high school and college teams, but given our current demographics and the future of our community, soccer at the professional level is a significant and contributing element of our community's entire sports profile.
"The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce encourages and supports professional soccer in South Florida and looks forward to the growth of the sport as a critical component of South Florida's quality of life and attractiveness to residents and visitors alike," commented the Greater Miami Chamberâs Chairman Carlos Fernandez-Guzman, senior executive vice president -- Neighborhood Banking Group, BankUnited, FSB.
Another reason stated in the resolution was to support the United States Soccer Federation bidding for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, which could be played in South Florida.
