Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN - On Wednesday, November 12, 2014, the Grand Rapids DRIVE will be special guests at West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science (WMAES). Students at WMAES have proposed scientific questions for their experiments, and three lucky fifth graders will get a shot at testing their hypotheses with players from the DRIVE.
The Science Symposium is a school-wide science fair that takes place each fall at WMAES. This year, three fifth grade students proposed this question: " What type of basketball shot is most accurate? " Thanks to their teacher, Miss Holly Orians, the students will have an opportunity to test that question with actual NBA players.
"Our students work diligently on their Science Symposium projects, " stated Holly Orians, Environmental Education Specialist at WMAES. " This year, we were able to actually make the experiments come to life for three students. Seeing their hypotheses in real life will help them to retain the information that much more. "
At 1:15pm on Wednesday, The DRIVE will arrive at WMAES ready to shoot some hoops for three hopeful fifth graders. Deon Farr, JaVeon Johnson, and Kenny Oliver. After a brief introduction, all 17 players from the DRIVE, the DRIVE Coach, Farr, Johnson, and Oliver will begin their experiment.
Johnson will test basketball shots starting from the chin, chest, and overhead. Each player will be asked to shoot each shot five times. Johnson will videotape and then collect the data. Farr and Oliver will test whether layups or shots with set feet will make the most baskets. After the experiment, students will have time to ask the team general questions and take a group photo.
"We are a rather small community within our school district, so giving our students the privilege of meeting professional basketball players for the purpose of education is truly a blessing, " said Kerri Barrett, WMAES elementary principal. " Our students are important to us; words can ' t express my feelings when I see them so excited about learning and the scientific process! "
Players from the Grand Rapids DRIVE will arrive at West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science at 1:15pm on Wednesday. The visit will last an hour, allowing Farr, Oliver, and Johnson time to complete their experiments, have the entire fifth grade ask questions, and for the Drive to meet the WMAES team.
