(Pleasanton, CA. August 1, 2005) The Golden Baseball League announced today the July Player and Pitcher of the Month for the league. Based on recommendations from SportsTicker, the winners for July are outfielder Juan Lebron of the Yuma Scorpions and pitcher Grant Gregg of the Chico Outlaws.

Juan Lebron rode an incredible July power surge to the top of the GBL leaderboard in home runs and RBIs for the season. During the month he hit for a .320 average with 6 home runs and 33 RBIs. His six home runs lead the league for the month, tied with Seth Pietsch of the San Diego Surf Dawgs, and his 33 RBIs were nine more than anyone in the league produced during July. Lebron, a 28 year-old from Puerto Rico and a former 1st round pick of the Kansas City Royals in 1995 (19th overall), now leads the GBL in home runs with 11 (tied with Pietsch) and in RBIs with 58 while raising his batting average to .297 and his slugging percentage to the fourth highest in the league at .565. The former AA farmhand of the St. Louis Cardinals also had a 12-game hitting streak during the month which featured home runs in three consecutive games.

Grant Gregg, a 24 year-old lefty pitcher out of Abilene Christian University, dominated GBL hitters during the month going 4-1 with a 2.40 E.R.A. in 45 innings pitched while striking out 42, walking just 5 batters, and throwing two complete games. Gregg has been a key reason for Chico's climb into the pennant race during July as he now leads the league in E.R.A for the season at 2.48 as he improved his record to 7-2. Drafted in the 9th round out of high school by the Minnesota Twins, Gregg chose college and attended Texas A&M before transferring and finishing his collegiate career at Abilene Christian where we was name Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year. Beginning his professional career in the Frontier League, he was quickly acquired by the San Diego Padres and pitched for them in 2003 and 2004 reaching as high as their AA ballclub in Mobile, Alabama. A native of Abilene, Texas, Grant caught the eye of college and pro scouts as a high school standout including a three-year record of 39 and 7 and twice being named to the Texas All-State team.

Other top players who received nominations for Player of the Month include Seth Pietsch (San Diego Surf Dawgs), Desi Wilson (Surprise Fightin' Falcons), Randall Shelley (Long Beach Armada), and Matt Brunson (Yuma Scorpions). Other nominations for Pitcher of the Month include Michael Hoyt (Long Beach Armada), Adam Pettyjohn (Long Beach Armada), Manny Ayala (Mesa Miners), and Hideki Nagasaka (Japan Samurai Bears).
