GOLD KINGS WHITEWASHED BY SAN DIEGO

March 17, 2002 - West Coast Hockey League (WCHL)
Colorado Gold Kings News Release

San Diego, CA – San Diego buried Colorado with three first period goals and cruised to a 3-0 victory in front of 7,482 Saturday evening at the San Diego Sports Arena.

The Gulls, who swept the Gold Kings for the first time since the 1998-99 season, put Colorado into a deep hole with three goals in the first period, beginning with a Taj Melson power play tally at 4:12, assisted by John Spoltore on a beautiful backhand pass through the slot. Spoltore flipped a rebound over a prostrate Colorado netminder Kirk Daubenspeck at 15:22, and Martin St. Amour buried a one-timer from between the circles with 51 seconds left in the period for a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the second frame.

Those three goals were more than enough for San Diego goaltender Trevor Koenig, who brushed aside all 24 shots he faced. Daubenspeck kept the game competitive, allowing no further scoring and finishing with 32 saves, but Colorado managed just 12 shots over the final 40 minutes and was shut out for the fourth time this season.

The Gold Kings (35-22-6) have lost three in a row and five of their past seven contests heading into a road game at first-place Idaho (42-14-7) Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. MST. Jack Michaels calls the play-by-play for Colorado's games, all of which are broadcast live on KKCS-AM Hot Talk 1460.
