Colorado Gold Kings News Release
Long Beach, CA â Winless in their last six, the suddenly struggling Colorado Gold Kings face another tough week with four more games in five nights against two resurgent teams in the Southern Division.
Colorado wasted a pair of third period leads this weekend in Long Beach against the red-hot Ice Dogs, who have won 15 of their last 17 games. The Gold Kings led 2-1 early in the final frame Saturday and eventually lost in the 11th round of a WCHL shootout, 3-2, despite holding Long Beach to only 18 shots. Sunday, Colorado again held a 2-1 edge on the strength of goals by Xavier Majic and Chad Cabana but gave up three goals in the final 12 minutes, including Chris Kenady's game-winner with 3:05 remaining.
Zac Boyer (22g-60a) and R.J. Enga (43g-38a) remain among the top five WCHL scorers but both have only two points over their last six games. The entire offense has slumped, managing only 10 goals over the current 0-5-1 stretch.
The Gold Kings (35-24-7) continue their road trip Tuesday night at Bakersfield's Centennial Garden. Colorado has not won since coughing up a 3-0 lead with less than 12 minutes left to play at home against Bakersfield on March 13th. Tuesday's game time against the Condors (27-35-5 overall but 5-1-1 in their last seven) is set for 8:05 p.m. MST.
Wednesday night, Colorado will be in Fresno for an 8:05 p.m. MST face-off. The Falcons are 20-5-6 (6-1-1 in their last eight) since opening the year with only eight wins in their first 34 games. The Gold Kings and Fresno head back to Colorado Springs for Friday and Saturday night games at the World Arena at 7:05 p.m. Of course, Friday's game is a "$5 Friday," where any ticket in the upper bowl may be purchased for five bucks, and Saturday is "Date Night," when two lower arena tickets, two hot dogs, and two sodas are available for only $25. Jack Michaels calls the play-by-play for Colorado's games, all of which are broadcast live on KKCS-AM Hot Talk 1460.
