Colorado Gold Kings News Release
Colorado Springs, CO - The Colorado Gold Kings have released the list of 12 players who will be protected under West Coast Hockey League guidelines for the 2002-03 season.
Heading the list is second team all-WCHL goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck, who posted a league-leading 2.01 goals against average and .934 save percentage even as the Gold Kings were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Tacoma. Second team all-WCHL forwards R.J. Enga (48 goals-47 assists) and Zac Boyer (25 goals-66 assists) also have been protected after finishing among the top four scorers in the league last season.
Craig Lyons, who placed sixth on the WCHL scoring chart with 79 points on 29 goals and 50 assists, and longtime linemate Tom Perry have been protected along with fellow veterans Greg Schmidt, Cody Bowtell, and Colin Chaulk. Chaulk racked up 19 goals and 46 assists in only 55 games for Colorado before being called up to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League just prior to the playoffs.
Head Coach Al Pedersen elected to protect four defensemen, including WCHL Rookie of the Year Mike Garrow and Aaron Boh, both of whom finished among the league's top ten scoring blueliners. Mike Nicholishen, who won a Kelly Cup with South Carolina (ECHL) in 2001 along with Schmidt and Daubenspeck, and rookie Brent Henley, who placed third on the team with 188 penalty minutes, round out the list of protected players.
The Colorado Gold Kings currently are taking orders for 2002-03 season tickets, starting at only $395 for all regular season and playoff games. Please call (719) 268-7172 for more ticket information or visit the official website at www.coloradogoldkings.com.
