Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND - The Portland LumberJax hope that the luck of the Irish will be on their side this Saturday when they take on the San Jose Stealth in California on St. Patrick's Day (March 17). The Jax are looking to snap their eight-game losing streak and are well rested having not played since their Feb. 23-24 road double-header against the Edmonton Rush and Colorado Mammoth.
"This is, without a question, the biggest game of the year for us," explained Head Coach and General Manager Derek Keenan. "We are in a race for a playoff spot with the Stealth and Rush. We can't control what goes on with the other teams and the other games, but we can control our future by getting back in the win column this weekend."
Last season the Jax faced off against the Stealth three times, coming out the victor in every meeting. In their first meeting (Jan. 27) the Jax took the game 15-8 in San Jose by keeping the Stealth scoreless in the fourth while scoring six goals of their own. The second match-up in 2006 took place in Portland on March 25. After the Jax fell behind 8-5 in the middle of the third, they scored three straight goals to tie the game 8-8. After exchanging tallies with the Stealth, the Jax were able to net the final goal and secure the 11-10 victory. In their final meeting last year, the Jax headed back to San Jose on April 7 and held the Stealth scoreless through the first half. San Jose caught up in the third, scoring four goals to the Jax two. It wasn't enough to take the lead and Portland won 9-6.
"It's going to be a difficult game for us," Keenan added. "They have multiple offensive weapons and outstanding goaltending. We've got to bring our best game possible."
Saturday marks the first of three match-ups this season against the San Jose Stealth. After this weekend's road game, the Jax will be back in Portland for the first time since their Feb. 15 battle with the Colorado Mammoth. The Jax will face the Stealth in the Rose Garden on Saturday, March 24 for Everyday Heroes Night and again on April 6. Both games are slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
