Lake Elsinore Storm News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm, class-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, the first professional sports franchise to present a promotional night encouraging health and sustainability will present a "Go Green Weekend." The Storm will host the Modesto Nuts April 18-20 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore. The Storm will bring in a variety of businesses and non-profit groups to educate fans about simple changes they can make in every day life to conserve natural resources. "We want to continue to build on the success of last year's promotion at a local level while hopefully influencing other sports facilities at a national level," said Storm President Dave Oster. "It's great to see other teams adding this valuable promotion to their schedules."
The Going Green weekend will kickoff on Friday with a Community Leader Business Mixer with drinks and appetizers in the Diamond Club restaurant from 5-6:30pm. There will be a question and answer session including spokespeople from CR & R Waste and Recycling Services, The Southern California Gas Company, Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District, Southern California Edison and other private businesses that have seen the benefits of pursuing sustainability. Business leaders from around the area are invited to learn more about what they can do to reduce consumption of natural resources around the office. In addition, the first 1,000 cars to pull into the parking lot will receive a Storm Car Sunshade courtesy of Southern California Toyota Dealers.
Saturday's festivities will begin at 5pm with the 2nd Annual Health and Sustainability Festival which will include a vendor village lining the walk way toward the main entrance. Fans will have access to information from all sorts of businesses that focus on helping to maintain a sustainable earth. The first 2,500 fans will get a Storm Seeded Postcard presented by Coca-Cola. Recipients can take the postcards home, plant in the ground and watch them grow as fans do their part in helping the environment.
"The Storm wants to do their part in raising awareness of maintaining a healthy lifestyle while doing all we can to preserve our environment and leave the earth in better condition than what currently exists," added Storm President Oster. "We are aware of the reports of global warming and the problems that exist with our environment and we want to do our part to help conserve and manage our natural resources."
The team's goal is to become the first professional sports franchise with an existing stadium to become LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and are challenging other sports facilities and teams to become leaders of their communities in setting examples for others.
Last season with the help of the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District, the Storm installed waterless urinals throughout the stadium. This season the team replaced their old field irrigation system and replaced it with a new system that will use reclaimed water. Commented Storm General Manager Chris Jones, "The team will save over one million gallons of water a year by implementing these programs. It's amazing how many rebate programs are out there to help businesses save both ecologically and economically. We not only want to promote sustainability, but we want to be leaders in our industry and continue to learn and implement programs in our stadium that will help eliminate waste."
The team recently consulted with The Gas and Electric Company on a stadium audit that will further help the team make some needed changes like light sensors, new energy efficient light bulbs, and new hot water heaters that will help the team save resources and money.
Oster concluded, "We feel this is a valuable promotion that will hopefully gain more exposure toward how we can all work together to make a difference, and help our planet and one another. Everything can be reused and saved. Eliminating waste from our vocabulary will mean we've succeeded."
Local youth groups from Cottonwood Elementary, Elsinore High School and Creekside High School will be recognized prior to the games Friday and Saturday for their exemplary efforts toward helping the environment. Throughout the weekend, the Storm will use the video board, concourse signage and PA announcements to educate fans with tips on going green.
