Glens Falls Defeats Amsterdam 7-4

For the first time in a long time, the Amsterdam Mohawks have hit a snag in this summer of 2011. With a 7-4 loss at the hands of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles on Sunday evening, the Mohawks have now dropped three of their last four games. The loss pushes the Mohawks a game and a half behind Glens Falls in the battle for the top overall seed in the PGCBL playoffs which begins on Friday.

The Golden Eagles were able to find a kink in the usually impenetrable armor of Brett Houseal when they nicked the righty for two runs in the bottom of the first. However, the Pennsylvania native controlled the damage by striking out the seventh and eighth place hitters with the bases loaded to end the top of the first.

The Mohawks had an early opportunity to square-up in the bottom of the second, but with the tying runs on second and third, Glens Falls' starter Kayvon Bahramzadeh (Kansas State) smothered the threat by fanning Josh Alexander (Utah) looking.

In the third, Glens Falls came up with four hits and tacked on three runs to widen the lead to 5-0. The big blow came off of Dan Klein's (Kansas State) bat when the catcher lashed a two-run double into left-field.

Amsterdam finally cracked the scoreboard in the fourth when Luke Maile (Kentucky) singled and came around to score on a peculiar fielder's choice that eventually ended the inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Brad Picha (Paris J.C.) slapped a grounder towards shortstop, after the force out at second, the relay throw to first pulled first baseman David Olson (Tacoma C.C.) off the base. Picha was initially ruled safe but was then tagged out after making an attempt to try and advance to second.

After the Mohawks picked up scoreless innings of relief from Will Kendall (Auburn) and Ethan Selby (Fulton-Montgomery C.C.), they went to work with the lumber again in the fifth. Alexander started the frame with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an infield single from Andrew Green (East Tennessee State). But after Bahramsadeh allowed a two-out walk to Zach Shank (Marist), the righty got stingy as he struck out Luke Maile (Kentucky) and stranded two men on base.

The Golden Eagles finally got to the Mohawks bullpen in the seventh as Josh Anderson (Yavapai) singled and plated his third R.B.I. of the night to help make it a 7-2 game after six and a half innings of play.

But the Mohawks are, by the numbers, the league's top offensive club, and the Golden Eagles must have had an inkling that Amsterdam would not go down freely. They didn't, Shank cranked a monster home run over the fence in left to start the eighth and two batters later, Maile blasted his eighth round-tripper over the wall in dead centerfield to trim the lead to three, 7-4.

But the Mohawks could not get any closer, they went down in order in the ninth and lost for the third time in four nights.

The Mohawks and Golden Eagles are vying for the top seed in the PGCBL playoffs, with the loss, Amsterdam falls two games behind Glens Falls in the loss column, the regular season ends on Wednesday.

Tomorrow night, the Mohawks will host Albany and Glens Falls will take on Mohawk Valley. On Tuesday, Amsterdam and Glens Falls will collide once again at Shuttleworth Park.
