Giroux, Denny and Sinkovic win player of the month awards

BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, October 2, 2006 - The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today announced the winners of the offensive, defensive and rookie of the month awards for September. The players are chosen by a League mandated committee from a list of candidates submitted by the eighteen QMJHL teams.

The offensive player of the month is Claude Giroux of the Gatineau Olympiques. The forward had quite a showing in September, tallying nine goals, including two game-winners, and six assists - good for fifteen points in six games. Furthermore, he was a healthy +6 (plus/minus). The Olympiques have won five of their first seven games so far this season. They are tied for second place in the Western division standings.

The other players considered were forwards Alexandre Picard-Hooper (5-9-14) of Baie-Comeau, Thomas Beauregard (9-6-15) of Acadie-Bathurst and Danick Bouchard (7-5-12) of Shawinigan.

The defensive player of the month award winner is Chad Denny of the Lewiston MAINEiacs. Denny had a very solid showing in the first two weeks of the season. He registered two goals, including one shorthanded, as well as seven assists, while maintaining a +3 (plus/minus) differential. Moreover, he punished his opponents with eighteen bodychecks. Lewiston is tied for second in the Eastern division standings with Cape Breton and PEI.

Goaltenders Jean-Christophe Blanchard (3-1; 2 SO; 240 MIN; 2.00 GAA; .929 SAV %) of the Tigres and Bobby Nadeau (1-5; 368 MIN; 2.93 GAA; .903 SAV %) of the Saguenéens, as well as defenseman Martin Fréchette (2-9-11; +4) of the Olympiques were also considered.

Among rookies, forward Julius Sinkovic takes home the hardware. The Foreurs sniper collected three goals, including one game-winner, as well as six helpers while maintaining a +6 (plus/minus) differential. He is second among rookies in scoring, trailing only Randy Cameron of the Moncton Wildcats by one point.

Forwards Randy Cameron (4-6-10) of Moncton and Christopher DiDomenico (2-7-9) of Saint John, as well as defenseman Keven Dupont (1-2-3; +4) of Baie-Comeau were also considered.
