MOLINE, Ill. - David Gilbert's hat trick propelled the Bloomington Blaze to a 6-3 win over the host Quad City Mallards Saturday night.

With just 2:17 left in the third period, Gilbert completed his hat trick by burying a Tyler Gron feed from the doorstep to stretch what had been a slender one goal Bloomington lead to 5-3. One minute and 12 seconds later Jesse Dudas's empty net goal iced the win for the Blaze.

Bloomington was able to pull away late only after the Mallards had gamely tried to battle all the way back from a 4-1 second period deficit. The Mallard recovery bid began with Mickey Lang's goal from the left wing circle with only 17 seconds left in the second. At 3:59 of the third period, Derek Matheson buried a shorthanded goal from the high slot cut the gap to 4-3.

The Mallards found themselves in need of a rally after the Blaze broke loose to score four straight goals- including three in the second period. Jon Booras's wrist shot from the high slot give Bloomington a 2-1 lead at 1:59 of the second. The margin stretched to 3-1 when Gilbert jammed home his second goal of the night and the first of two in 106 seconds for the Blaze at the 8:41 mark. Bloomington was on the power play when Matthew Larke scored from the low slot at 10:27.

The evening had begun promisingly for the Mallards when Mike Stinziani converted Lang's centering pass to give Quad City a 1-0 lead at 5:05 of the first period. However, with each team down a man, Gilbert would even the score from point blank range with just over 45 seconds left in the first with what proved to be just the start of the Blaze onslaught.
