Gibson's Finest CFL Players of the Week Named

Toronto, ON - (August 24, 2010) - Brandon Whitaker, Chip Cox, Jovon Johnson and Andre Durie were named the Gibson's Finest CFL Players of the Week for week eight, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Gibson's Finest CFL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RB - Brandon Whitaker - Montreal Alouettes

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 17 @ Montreal Alouettes 39

Highlights / Key Stats:

Montreal running back Brandon Whitaker made the most of his first start of the 2010 season, filling in admirably for an injured Avon Cobourne and leading his club to a 39-17 victory over the Bombers. After Winnipeg narrowed the Als' lead to seven points, Whitaker scored two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Whitaker finished the contest with 11 carries for 74 yards rushing, including the two TD's from 19 and 10 yards out respectively.

The second-year Alouette added five receptions for 44 yards, totaling 118 yards from scrimmage in the winning effort.

Gibson's Finest CFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LB - Chip Cox - Montreal Alouettes

Highlights / Key Stats:

Chip Cox was a force to be reckoned with in week eight, leading Montreal's defence to an emphatic 39-17 win over the Bombers at McGill Stadium. In the first quarter, the Als linebacker recovered a Steven Jyles fumble and returned it 14 yards for the game's first touchdown. Cox added a team-high nine tackles, including one sack and one pass defended in the Als' 13th straight regular season win at home. This marks the second time Cox has been named Gibson's Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Week. Cox also collected the award for his play in week six against the Riders.

Cox currently leads the Als with 39 defensive tackles, and is tied for the team lead with two interceptions through eight games.

Gibson's Finest CFL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KR - Jovon Johnson - Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 17 @ Montreal Alouettes 39

Highlights / Key Stats:

Bombers kick returner Jovon Johnson was a positive contributor for his team as they were defeated 39-17 by the Alouettes. Johnson brought Winnipeg within a touchdown of the Als on a spectacular 74-yard punt return touchdown late in the third quarter. Winnipeg's premier playmaker returned six punts for 105 yards and one touchdown, joining Chip Cox as a two-time recipient of Gibson's Finest CFL Players of the Week honours in 2010.

Johnson leads the CFL with 449 punt return yards and two punt return TD's this season.

RB/SB - Andre Durie - Toronto Argonauts

Highlights / Key Stats:

Running back/slotback Andre Durie had a solid performance in defeat, as the Argos were edged out 16-12 by the Ticats at Rogers Centre. Durie racked up seven receptions for 69 yards, both career-highs, and added one carry for 15 yards in the losing cause. The 84 yards from scrimmage was also a career best for the former York Lion and Mississauga, Ontario native.

Durie is currently in his fourth CFL season, all as a member of the Argos.
