San Jose Giants News Release
LAKE ELSINORE, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Monday evening at The Diamond. Rod Boykin's two-out triple plated the tying and go-ahead runs as the Storm completed a sweep of the three-game series. With the loss, San Jose (45-57 overall, 11-21 second half) went 1-5 on their six-game Southern California road trip.
Kelvin Beltre (1-for-4, HR, RBI) smacked a solo home run while Bryce Johnson (3-for-4, SB) singled three times and scored a run to lead the Giants offensively in defeat.
San Jose carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth before Lake Elsinore rallied. Reliever DJ Myers retired the first two batters of the inning on a groundout and a strikeout before Nolan Riggs was summoned from the bullpen. Hudson Potts greeted Riggs with a sharp single to left and then Luis Torrens belted an RBI double to the fence in deep left center to cut the Giants lead in half. A five-pitch walk to Brad Zunica followed before Boykin crushed a 3-2 pitch from Riggs off the fence in deep center for a triple. The hit easily scored both Torrens and Zunica to give the Storm a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Wander Franco was hit by a pitch with two outs before pinch-runner Johneshwy Fargas stole second to put the potential tying run into scoring position. Lake Elsinore reliever Colby Blueberg though struck out Beltre on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
Elliot Ashbeck (4-2) picked-up the win for the Storm after holding San Jose scoreless over the seventh and eighth innings. Ashbeck allowed one hit and struck out two during his relief outing. Blueberg pitched the top of the ninth for his first save in the California League this season.
Riggs (4-5) surrendered all three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the loss.
The Giants jumped out early in the contest scoring once in the top of the first against Lake Elsinore starter Pedro Avila. Johnson led off the game with a single and immediately scored when the next batter, Jalen Miller, hammered a double into the left field corner. Miller took third on the play when the relay throw home bounced away for an error, but was stranded there after Gio Brusa and Heath Quinn both struck out and Dillon Dobson grounded out.
San Jose extended their lead to 2-0 when Beltre crushed the first pitch of the top of the fifth over the fence in deep left center for a home run. The round-tripper was Beltre's third of the season.
Mac Marshall started on the mound for the Giants and worked three scoreless innings. Marshall scattered four hits, walked none and struck out two during his 34-pitch outing. Myers then relieved Marshall to begin the bottom of the fourth and kept the Storm off the scoreboard throughout his entire long relief stint. Myers tossed 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen with four hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts.
