Giants Sweep Ports with 10-Inning Victory

SAN JOSE - Luke Anders' one-out double in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Joe Panik from first base with the winning run to lift the San Jose Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Stockton Ports on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. After the Ports tied the contest with a single run in the top of the ninth, the Giants won it in the 10th to earn a sweep of the three-game series. The victory improves San Jose's overall record to 17-11.

Anders (2-for-5, 2 2B, RBI) doubled twice and Carter Jurica (1-for-5, HR, RBI) blasted his second home run of the season to lead the Giants offensive attack. Ricky Oropesa (2-for-5, 2B) and Chris Lofton (2- for-5) also finished with two hits apiece.

The bottom of the 10th began with Panik drawing a four-pitch while facing Stockton reliever Ryan Doolittle. After Oropesa popped out, Anders stepped to the plate and smashed a hard grounder down the line that bounced over the head of Stockton first baseman Josh Whitaker and into the corner. When right fielder Chad Oberacker couldn't cut the ball off in front of the warning track, Panik raced around third and easily scored the game-winning run.

Edward Concepcion (1-0), who was San Jose sixth pitcher of the night, picked-up the win after tossing a 1-2-3 top of the 10th inning.

The Giants initially took a 1-0 lead when Jurica belted a solo homer to left in the bottom of the first inning. In the fourth, Panik led off with a single before Oropesa clubbed a double off the fence in center to put runners on second and third. After Anders popped out, Alex Burg delivered an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.

Taylor Rogers started on the mound for San Jose and tossed five scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed 10 baserunners on six hits and four walks during his stint on the mound, but never surrendered a run. Rogers struck out six.

The Ports put runners on first and second with none out in both the second and fourth innings, but failed to score in each frame. They also stranded a runner at second in the first and third innings while Rogers struck out Rashun Dixon with the bases loaded to end the top of the fifth.

Jose Valdez (1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) relieved Rogers to begin the top of the sixth and worked out of a runners at first and third, one-one jam to keep the shutout intact. Finally, Stockton broke through in the top of the seventh as Valdez issued a one-out walk to A.J. Kirby-Jones before Phil McCormick (1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) walked Dixon with two outs and then allowed an RBI single to Max Stassi. New pitcher Chris Wilson (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) though limited the damage in the inning when he struck out the next batter, Ryan Pineda.

After Wilson worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth - the first perfect inning of the night for a Giants hurler - Seth Rosin (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) entered to begin the ninth. With the Ports trailing 2-1, Miles Head led off with a double into the right field corner before Kirby-Jones singled to right putting runners on the corners. Rosin recovered to strikeout Michael Gilmartin, but Dixon then grounded into a fielder's choice as the pinch-runner Whitaker was forced out at second, however Head scored the tying run. Rosin then induced Stassi to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

With the game tied, the Giants were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth as Lofton singled with two outs, but Jurica lined out to left sending the game to extra-innings.

Concepcion needed just 10 pitches to work a 1-2-3 top of the 10th before San Jose won the game in the bottom of the inning.

Stockton starter T.J. Walz received a no-decision after allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked none.
