Giants Score Three Runs In Ninth Inning To Defeat Visalia, 9-8

May 4, 2005 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Angel Chavez¹s one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a three-run rally for the San Jose Giants as they defeated the Visalia Oaks by a 9-8 score on Wednesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. With the victory, the Giants take the series from Visalia and maintain their first place standing in the North Division 1 1/2 games ahead of Stockton who plays later tonight.

Trailing 8-6, Guillermo Rodriguez started the ninth inning rally by getting hit by a pitch. Clay Timpner was up next and the center fielder dropped a perfect bunt along the third base line. Third baseman Aneudi Cuevas fielded the ball, but his throw sailed over first baseman John-Paul Davis¹ head and down the right field line. Timpner, who was credited with a single, raced around to third base on the play as Rodriguez scored to make the score 8-7.

Kevin Frandsen then followed with a single into center field as Timpner scored to tie the game at 8-8. After Nate Schierholtz sacrificed Frandsen to second with a bunt, Eddy Martinez-Esteve was intentionally walked to put two runners on. Then on a 1-2 pitch, Chavez grounded a single up the middle and into center field as Frandsen scored giving San Jose the victory.

The Giants trailed 7-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning as they scored three runs in the frame to climb back in the game. Martinez-Esteve scored the first two runs with a home run to deep left field, his sixth round-tripper of the season. The third tally came home when Todd Jennings drove home Chavez, who had earlier singled, on a sacrifice fly.

Visalia added to their lead in the top of the ninth to make it an 8-6 score. Facing Geno Espineli, the Oaks plated a run and had the bases loaded with no outs as they threatened to blow the contest open. But Jeff Petersen came on in relief and needed just three pitches to set down the next three batters without any more runs coming home to score.

Offensively, Martinez-Esteve had another strong game at the plate finishing 3-for-4 with the home run and three RBI. Chavez (2-for-4, RBI) also had a multi-hit game to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Rodriguez smacked his first home run of the season with a solo blast in the bottom of the fifth inning.

San Jose starter Garrett Broshuis did not figure in the decision after allowing five runs (four earned) in 4 2/3 innings. Petersen was credited with his first victory of the season.
