Casper, Wy.- The ghosts held their first official practice today as most of the squad has arrived in Casper. Twelve players return from last season's Rockies team including infielder Zack Murry who led the team with 61 hits.
In the Ghosts inaugural season since changing their name from the Rockies they're looking forward to welcoming pitcher Kurt Yacko from Chapman University to the squad. The righthander was taken with the Rockies 8th Round pick, 257th overall. Last season for the Panthers Yacko was 6-0 and had 71 strikeouts in 61 innings. He was named Division III Independent Player of the Year for the second straight year. He also led Division III in ERA (0.57) and saves (15).
Five newcomers to the Ghosts arrive courtesy of the Rockies squad from the Dominican Summer League. Among them Angelys Nina, an infielder who led the DSL Rockies in eight offensive categories including batting average (.323), hits (82), home runs (3), and RBI's (43). Also arriving from the DSL Rockies is Ricardo Ferrer who went 2-1 last season in just four games, all starts.
Other players who were taken in the 2008 MLB Draft include Alan DeRatt a right handed pitcher from UNC-Asheville, chosen in the 17th round. DeRatt went 8-2 in fourteen starts with a minuscule ERA of 1.74 for the Bulldogs. Craig Bennigson was selected with the Rockies 9th Round pick out of California-Berkeley. The southpaw was 4-5 in the 2008 campaign for the Bears.
The Ghosts will play an exhibition game on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against the Casper Hurricanes at Mike Lansing Field before beginning the 2008 season in Idaho Falls against the Chukars on Tuesday. The home opener for the Ghosts will be Friday, June 20, at 7:05 p.m against Idaho Falls. Opening day tickets are now on sale by contacting the Ghosts front office at 232-1111.
