Georgia's Troy Bergeron named AFL Rookie of the Year

NEW YORK – Georgia Force OS TROY BERGERON (6-2, 190, Middle Tennessee State) was selected the 2005 Rookie of the Year as voted by the AFL head coaches, fans and Arena Football League Writers Association (AFLWA). The announcement was made live on ESPNews this afternoon.

The AFL's youngest player (21), who earned All-Rookie Team honors last week, set an AFL rookie-record with 1,372 receiving yards (Portland's ORONDE GADSDEN, 1,335 in 1997) while tallying 105 receptions and 31 touchdowns. Bergeron also had 64 kick returns for 1,180 yards and finished with 2,550 all-purpose yards and 188 points.

Bergeron, who earned Offensive Player of the Week honors in the Divisional Round, led the National Conference No. 1-seeded Force (12-5) to a 62-46 victory over the Tampa Bay Storm with eight receptions for 85 yards and three touchdowns. On special teams, he returned four kicks for 102 yards, including a 56-yard return for a touchdown. The Force will host No. 3-seeded Orlando Predators (11-6) in the National Conference Championship game at Philips Arena this Saturday, June 4 at 3 p.m. ET on NBC.

Other candidates included: Dallas' CLINT STOERNER, Georgia's DEREK LEE and New York's BILLY PARKER.

The Coach of the Year honors will be announced Thursday, June 2. ADT Defensive Player, Offensive Player and U.S. Army Ironman of the Year honors will be announced next week. Following is the complete list of the Rookie of the Year award winners:
