Georgia's McAlmont Named Week 1 National Guard Community MVP
March 16, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release
CHICAGO - Georgia Force OL KEVIN McALMONT has been named National Guard Community MVP of the Week for his recent philanthropic efforts.
McAlmont (6-2, 305, Western Carolina) played for the New Orleans VooDoo in 2008 before joining the Force in 2011. McAlmont also spent time in the NFL, CFL and NFL Europe. Recently, McAlmont visited Alcova Elementary School and Rockbridge Elementary School in Stone Mountain, GA. McAlmont read children books to students, answered questions and joined them with a school-wide cleanup.
"It's always interesting to see how the children react," McAlmont said. "They look at me and say, 'Wow, you are so big! What position do you play? It's nice that they look up to us."
McAlmont also paid a visit to the Zone at Scottish Rite Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and volunteered at the Lions Lighthouse Foundation on Martin Luther King Day.
"It's very important to get in the community. I enjoy telling the children about my life and how I got to where I am. I try to steer them in the right direction. Because they look up to athletes, they listen. I advise them that they can't just concentrate on sports; they have to focus on school. Coming from an athlete, those words affect them differently," McAlmont said.
The Force (1-0) face the Tampa Bay Storm (0-1) in Week 2 tonight at 8:00 pm ET on "NET10 Arena Football Friday" on NFL Network.
The National Guard Community MVP is awarded to one player each week to recognize their commitment to community service. Following the 2012 season, players will be voted on by fans to become the National Guard Community MVP of the Year.
