Las Vegas Stars News Release
Las Vegas, NV-The Las Vegas Stars, an expansion team in the International Basketball League, have announced that George Tarkanian has signed on to be the first head coach in the team's history. Tarkanian, son of coaching legend Jerry Tarkanian, intends to offer Las Vegas basketball fans the same up-tempo, winning style of play that characterized his father's teams at UNLV. Tarkanian will be joined on the sideline by assistant coach Charles Williams.
After graduating from the University of San Diego as a two-year letterman, Tarkanian started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Antelope Valley College. He was a head coach for eight seasons in the California Junior College ranks, compiling a record of 235-81. He took three teams to the final eight, two to the final four, and one team to the State Finals. He is currently the head coach at the Community College of Southern Nevada.
Head Coach George Tarkanian-"I am extremely excited to begin coaching in the professional ranks. We are already working to build a team that the southern Nevada community will be proud to support."
Las Vegas Stars' CEO/General Manager Alexis Levi-Scott-"George's experience and passion for the game make him the ideal choice to coach this team. We are thrilled to have him."
The Stars' search for players begins on Sunday, November 19 at the team's first tryout at Stations Sports Complex, 8:00am-4:00pm. The Stars will be recruiting nationally, with tryouts scheduled-one apiece in New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The Las Vegas Stars inaugural season kicks off with a road trip to face the Phoenix Flame on Friday, April 6 at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Stars home opener is on Thursday, April 19 versus the Colorado Crossover. The Stars' home games will be played at the Stations Sports Complex-the team has arranged to significantly increase seating capacity on game days, and the Station Casino and hotel (next door) will offer fans valet parking.
