ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Steamers, again, welcomed a call from the Major Indoor Soccer League regarding another individual achievement by a member of the Steamers. This time around, the MISL is giving the Defensive Player of the Week Award to Genoni Martinez after scoring three goals and adding two assists over the weekend in which the Steamers split their scheduled games; a 6-5 overtime win over the Philadelphia KiXX and a 6-4 loss to the Chicago Storm.
On Saturday night, in front of 7,633 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia, Martinez scored two goals, both off of restarts, to help secure another win (6-5 OT) and extended the team's winning streak to seven games. He also assisted on the overtime game-winner by fellow defender D.J. Newsom. It was Martinez's first game back with the club after missing the previous five games. The next afternoon in Chicago's UIC Pavilion, Martinez added another goal to give him a total of three for the weekend. It was a game the Chicago Storm went on to win 6-4, ending the Steamers winning streak.
Martinez, a Mexico City native, has twice been awarded the MISL Defender of the year award and was an All-MISL First Team member following the 2004-2005 season. So far this season, his first with the Steamers, the 30 year old defender has scored three goals and added six assists for a total of nine points in six games played.
Jim Larkin of the California Cougars won the Goalkeeper of the Week while Giuliano Celenza of the Baltimore Blast took home the Offensive Player of the Week honor.
