Genoni Martinez Named MISL Defensive Player of the Month

ST. LOUIS - For the second time this season, the Major Indoor Soccer League announced Genoni Martinez was awarded the MISL Defensive Player of the Month yesterday, after his outstanding performance during the month of March. Martinez scored in seven of the Steamers eight games keeping them at the top of the League with a 22-7 record. With only one regular season game left and heading into the playoffs, Martinez will be one of the most watched players in the post-season.
Martinez, a 31 year old native of Mexico City, is also a two-time MISL Defender of the Year. He has acquired two Player of the Week selections this season for the weeks of January 9th and February 20th. Martinez was also a First-Team All-MISL Selection last season. There is no doubt that Martinez is one of the leaders of what has been coined "The Stingiest Defense in the MISL".
Genoni Martinez is tied for third on the Steamers in points (30), third in goals (16), second in assists (14), and is tied for second in the MISL with six restart goals. He also represented the Mexican All-Stars in the MISL All-Star Game in Milwaukee this season. Genoni and the rest of the Steamers will take the field this Saturday April 8th at 7:05pm at the Savvis Center against the Chicago Storm for their last regular season game. They will then face Chicago again in the Semi-Final Round of the MISL Championship Series. Game 1 will be in Chicago on April 15th at 6:00 pm at UIC Pavilion. Game 2 will be at Savvis on April 22nd at 7:05 pm.
