Greensboro Generals News Release

Greensboro, NC — The Greensboro Generals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) have signed their first player for the 2002-2003 campaign. Goaltender Daniel Berthiaume (BERTH-ee-ohm), a 16-year veteran who spent eight years in the National Hockey League, will be between the pipes for the Generals this season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Berthiaume, 36, has played for one of the Generals' chief rivals, the Roanoke Express, for each of the last five and seven of the last eight seasons. However, the Express cut him loose in the off-season, allowing the Generals to sign one of the most accomplished goaltenders in the history of the ECHL.

"I'm definitely very excited," says Berthiaume. "It's a challenge, but I think we can climb the mountain and make the Generals a winner. I'm really looking forward to the beginning of the season."

Berthiaume, a 5'9", 170 pound native of Longueuil, Quebec, has played an incredible 615 games, with a career record of 288-228-52, a 3.27 goals against average and a .894 save percentage. A total of 215 games were played in the National Hockey League, where he held an 81-90-21 mark, including a pair of 20-win seasons with the Winnipeg Jets (22 in 1987-88) and the Los Angeles Kings (20 in 1990-91). His numbers with the Express are even more sparkling, going 142-83-24 in 258 games, with a 2.66 goals against average, a .913 save percentage, and a winning record all seven years. His ECHL numbers rank him in the top five in league history in games played, wins, goals against average, and save percentage.

Generals season tickets for the 2002-03 campaign for all 36 home games at the Greensboro Coliseum is only $199.00 through the end of July. The offer is good for all seats except On-Ice and Foxhole tickets, which have their own special price of $249.00 and $299.00 respectively. To take advantage of the offer, all season tickets must be purchased by July 31. Along with the price of the season tickets, the Generals are offering free season parking passes for the first 500 season ticket accounts.
