Generals Outlast Smokies 10-8 in Marathon Game

KODAK, TENN. (JULY 16, 2012) - The Generals had to work extremely hard on Monday to get to 20-games above .500 for the first time in 2012. Jackson (15-9, 57-37) won their second straight, 10-8 over the Smokies, in a game that lasted 4 hours and 10 minutes at Smokies Park. The teams combined for 28 hits and 10 total pitchers used in the game. It was the longest 9-inning in the Southern League this season.

The Generals jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead Monday with a run scoring in the second on a double by Ralph Henriquez that scored Rich Poythress.

Jackson went on to score five runs in the third inning and sent 10 batters to the plate. During the inning Joe Dunigan and Gabriel Noriega added two-run singles and a run scored on a Chih-Hsien Chiang double play ball. Jackson led 6-0 after three frames.

The Smokies got on the board in the third on a 2-run homer by Jae-Hoon Ha and trimmed the lead to 6-2.

The Generals added single runs in the fourth and fifth to extend the lead to 8-2, but the Smokies would come back.

Tennessee sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth and pushed across five runs to trim the Jackson lead to 8-7.

Greg Rohan delivered an RBI single for the Smokies in the sixth and tied the game at 8-8.

The Generals responded in the top of the seventh inning. Leury Bonilla opened the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Gabriel Noriega. Denny Almonte singled to center scoring Bonilla and Jackson led 9-8. Stefen Romero brought in Almonte with a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make the score 10-8.

During the course of the game Generals' manager Jim Pankovits and pitcher Moises Hernandez were ejected. The two teams combined to use 10 pitchers in the contest.

Jackson starter Anthony Fernandez failed to get his fifth straight win, getting a no decision. Fernandez allowed 4 runs on 9 hits in just 4.0 innings of work. Yoervis Medina (3-4) earned the win pitching 2.0 pressure packed innings in the sixth and seventh. Medina struck out 4 and allowed just 2 hits. Jandy Sena pitched a scoreless eighth and Carter Capps saved his 17th game of the year with a scoreless ninth.

Rich Poythress was 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to a Generals season-best 12 games. Denny Almonte, Stefen Romero, Chih-Hsien Chiang and Leury Bonilla collected two hits each for the Generals. Romero, Dunigan and Gabriel Noriega collected two RBI's apiece.

The Generals wrap up their four-game series at Tennessee on Tuesday night, with first pitch set for 6:15 p.m. CT. Jackson will send to the mound RHP Brandon Maurer (6-2, 3.78) while RHP Nick Struck (10-8, 3.34) will make the start for Tennessee.
