TODAY'S GAME: The Generals (18-24) wrap up their 10-game homestand (3-6) today with the rubber match of the 5-game series with Birmingham (CHW) (28-16). The Generals are 28-14 against the Barons in Jackson since 2008 and won the series last season, 6-4. 23-year-old righty Brett Shankin makes his 7th Generals start in game 5 of the series. Shankin is making his 33rd career start. Shankin was 1-1, with a 2.61 ERA for A+ High Desert this season before being transferred to Jackson on 4/15.
GENERALS RECAP: The Generals scored all 4 of the team's runs in the 8th inning, but their rally fell short as Jackson lost to Birmingham 10-4 on Sunday night. RF James Jones (2x4, R, 2B) led the team with 2 hits, while C Brandon Bantz (1x2, R, HR, 2 RBI), LF Leon Landry (1x4, R, 2B, RBI) and 2B Gabriel Noriega (1x4, R, 2B, RBI) combined to drive in all 4 of the Generals runs in the 8th inning. Starter Taijuan Walker (4.2,8,7,5,2,5) recorded his 4th loss of the season, allowing 7 runs (5 R) on 8 hits in 4.2 innings. RH Andrew Kittredge (1.0,6,3,3,2,1) allowed 3 runs in 1.0 inning of work, while RH Forrest Snow (3.1,1,0,0,0,3) allowed only 1 hit and struck out 3 in 3.1 innings in relief.
Hey Generals intern Chris Turpin, YOU ALREADY KNOW...that the Generals lost 10-6 on Sunday night. But, DID YOU KNOW?...that the 6-run loss was only 6th loss this season by more than 2 runs. The 15 hits allowed also tied a season-high by an opponent.
NEWS & NOTES: Jackson ranks T-3rd in the SL in batting (.250), 3rd in hits (351), 2nd in triples (13) and 4th in stolen bases (47). Jackson Pitching is 3rd in hits allowed (327), 2nd in ERA (3.34), 3rd in walks allowed (130) and 2nd in strikeouts (329), - 20 of first 42 games have been 1-run games (6-14) which is 2nd in all of minors...25 of 42 games have been decided by 2-or-fewer runs (7-18) and 6 have been extra-inning games (2-4)...In games decided by 3+ runs the Generals are 11-6. - RH Stephen Kohlscheen has not allowed a run in his last 9.1 innings in relief (5 G). He has allowed only 1 run in his last 16.1 innings in relief. During this stretch he limited opponent to a .172 (10x58) average, while walking 3 and striking out 20. Since April 21, Kohlscheen has lowered his season ERA from 6.35 to 2.05 in 8 games in relief. - After allowing 2 runs in his first relief outing on April 5, LH Nick Hill has allowed only 3 runs in his last 17.1 innings. Overall this season he has limited opponents to a .203 (13x64) average, while walking 10 and striking out 14. - RHP Taijuan Walker allowed 10 earned runs over his last 3 starts (16.0 innings), after allowing only 2 earned runs in his previous 5 starts (6 R) from April 10-May 1. Overall this season, he is 3-4 with a 2.77 ERA (16 ER, 52.0 IP) in 9 starts. WINDY CITY HOMESTAND: The Generals are in their longest homestand of the season, welcoming the Smokies (CHC) and Barons (CHW) at The Ballpark for 10 games in 9 days. The homestand includes a scheduled doubleheader on May 18 vs. Birmingham.
HOSTING THE OVC: For the 4th year in a row The Ballpark in Jackson will host the Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship. This year the six-team, double-elimination tournament will be held May 22-26 and marks the 35th OVC Baseball Championship.
