Generals Clinch First Half Championship

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. (JUNE 11, 2012) - The Jackson Generals clinched their first division championship on Monday night in Jacksonville since 2008. The Generals win the Southern League North title, with five games remaining in the first half. The 39-26 Generals defeated the Jacksonville Suns on Monday night 8-0. Jackson finished the 10-game road trip, 6-4. Jackson posted their eighth shutout of the season.The Generals received some help from Mobile Monday, who swept the Huntsville Stars in a double-header. The Generals will have home field advantage in the first round of the Southern League playoffs in September.

Chris Pettit, Nick Franklin, Jesus Sucre, Joe Dunigan, Chih-Hsien Chiang and Gabriel Noriega picked up two-hit games.

Brandon Maurer (5-1) provided the pitching, tossing 7.1 scoreless frames, while scattering six hits. Maurer matched a season high with 7 strikeouts in the victory. Yoervis Medina, Bobby LaFromboise and Carter Capps provided scoreless relief behind Maurer.

After reaching on a single, Nick Franklin came around to score on an error by Suns' left fielder Jake Smolinski in the top of the fourth. The next batter, Joe Dunigan smashed a two-run home run to give Jackson an early 3-0 lead.

Jackson upped the score to 5-0 in the top of the seventh inning scoring a run on an error and 2 out double by Chris Pettit.

Again the Generals rallied with two outs in the eighth as Joe Dunigan scored on an RBI single by Chih-Hsien Chiang to make the score 6-0.

In the ninth, Denny Almonte and Jesus Sucre delivered RBI singles to make the final score, 8-0.

The Generals will have a travel day on Tuesday and return to Pringles Park on Wednesday night to host the Chattanooga Lookouts for the final homestand of the first half. First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. RHP Taijuan Walker (4-1, 3.80) will take the mound for Jackson against RHP Matthew Neil (1-0, 4.37) for Jacksonville.
